Since 2011, Pro Terra Sancta has been working alongside the Franciscan friars living in the Musky convent in Cairo. The Musky neighborhood is one of the poorest areas of the city, filled with people in need of support and assistance. The association is committed to distributing medicines and food, as well as providing financial aid to the most impoverished in paying rent installments.
Together with the Franciscan Sisters of CIM, who have active works throughout the country, Pro Terra Sancta has initiated educational assistance to support the schooling of the neediest children, providing various forms of support. This includes covering school fees and those of children living in orphanages, medical expenses for the most impoverished families, and expenses for essential goods. Thanks to this project, we have supported 248 children and young people, along with their families.
The Musky convent, besides being a reference point for the poor in the neighborhood and the entire city, houses an important library of Christian texts in Arabic and an archive of documents that attest to the presence of Christianity in Egypt through the centuries. This is the Center for Eastern Christian Studies, where one of the two poles of our "Books, Bridges of Peace" project operates. In addition to being an important center for study and research, it also ends up providing support to the residents of the Musky neighborhood: the archive contains many personal acts and documents, contributing to preserving the memory of their history and that of their families.
