CONTEXT & OBJECTIVE
Since 2017, we have been supporting the Ecole d'Habilitation et d'Initiation pour le Sourds (EHIS), Aleppo's only school for deaf and dumb children, by covering a portion of the administration and maintenance expenditures. The school, which is next to the Franciscan convent of Er-Ram, has 55 students aged 6 to 15. These youngsters will be able to complete their education up to third grade by attending the EHIS and following the Ministry of Education's official program. Lessons are always taught by two teachers, one of whom uses sign language. In 2020, after facing the costs of updating the school to the health needs of the pandemic situation, Pro Terra Sancta allowed 150 children and 24 teachers to take part in the lessons.Medical and health care are highly important aspects of the curriculum, with children receiving frequent psychological visits and health checks. A periodic comparison with doctors and teachers is offered for children's families in order to track the child's growth and development.
